Saw the ‘81 Datsun today. 40k miles, two owner (mother then son), 2.6L 2.8L engine (non-turbo), immaculate condition, asking price: $16k. It’s at times like these I wish I had garage and money. Still, saw my very first Datsun! I’m pretty sure that counts as a oppo merit badge, right?

Them’s fighting words.

Nope, just 2.0L and 2.8L, each with the option to be turbocharged. :)

Indeed, it is. Never have I wanted a garage just to hold a car until now.

Maybe... not sure?

This: you need to know all of the model numbers and engine displacments of every Datsun/Nissan Z car before you get your oppo card. Then learn all of the body codes for the BMW 3 and 5 series, and finally learn all of the model codes for the Miata. Then and only then is the Oppo Card issued.

Also, that is the cleanest ZX I have ever seen.

$16000? $16000??? Insane prices...is that what these go for these days?

Yes, then it was v6 for the 300zx.

This thing was immaculate, the guy had to point out what was wrong with it, and he couldn’t even find one of the two issue on it.
Still high though, but they did say they did the research.

When I was in the Army in 1986, a lieutenant named Ron Huther had one of the new 300 ZXs and claimed it had a straight-six. I said, “No, Sir, it does not.” “Yes it does, Specialist,” he replied. I said, “Sir, I’ll bet you lunch that it has a V-6.” “You’re on.” The other lieutenant, the company XO, witnessed this and said, “Let’s go raise the hood!” Guess what. V-6 and that useless New York lieutenant never bought me lunch. And we were only talking about a Whopper from the BK across the street.

For one of those in good shape, I think he’s not out of the ball park. But I’d rather shell out for an immaculate 240 or 260.

You read Motor Trend, he didn’t.

2.8 liter turbocharged? Well I bet do that thing could scoot

Yep, wiki says a L28ET. Reading that page, it says the L28ET was considered too powerful for Japan, so it wasn't sold there. That's awesome, :).

I don’t know the market on these, but they are extremely rare in the rust belt.

No clue what they go for, I just know I’d never pay that much for one.

They did the research, and priced it hoping to get 12500. Which is still high, even if she’s hotter than Yasmine Bleethe, when she was giving blow-j’s for acting jobs when this was being assembled.

I’m not sure he knew
how
to read. Some of those lieutenants, I couldn’t figure out how they got their boots tied in the morning, which is not to say that some of them weren’t good folk.

Back in the 80s my dad had a red 81 280zx with a T top. I really loved that car. Tracy chapmans fast car playing on the alpine stereo cassette player.
I have been told that exact car is in a garage waiting to be rebuild in a garage 4 houses away from my house.

Wow, that’s the one I want! Is there an example of an American car too powerful for America?

I've been debating if I should vin stalk this car. I really want to know where it goes...

Most cars from before the 1990s don’t have much in way of records. If you want to see where it was registered you’d have to mail the state and ask them to look through some archived files or some hastily digitized documents that may or may not have what you’re looking for.
![]() 02/23/2016 at 21:14 |
|
The salesman talked about a carfax, so I assumed there was one, to some degree at least. And it was originally sold in this state.
![]() 02/23/2016 at 21:17 |
|
Does it have a modern format VIN? I think those came in 1982. Pre 82' vins are impossible to look up without previously mentioned asking the state. This might be the new format though, it’s the right time period.
![]() 02/23/2016 at 21:27 |
|
I wouldn’t either, but it doesn't sound crazy to me. Just not what I would pick, even though I like them.
![]() 02/23/2016 at 21:28 |
|
Not true. Just pay for a report and you can see when/where it’s been registered, and see if any major wrecks or claims have been filed.

I had a black one for about a year. Hasn’t been driven since 2001. Did not run when parked :)
But has less than 80K miles on it and I want it back. We could be car twins.
![]() 02/23/2016 at 21:48 |
|
Well, if it’s pre 1981 you can’t.
![]() 02/23/2016 at 22:47 |
|
That might be. I know that mid/late 80s is doable.
![]() 02/23/2016 at 23:07 |
|
Carfax only takes the current Vin format.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 06:22 |
|
The vin is #JN1HZ06SXBX184989, not sure if that's modern though.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 08:08 |
|
Yup. It just made the cut. Still don’t know if there will be many early records. They didn’t start digitizing this data until the late 80s.

$16,000!!!??????? Is there $11,000 in the trunk somewhere. Holy balls that’s a crazy price for one of these.
